His Name is Yahweh

“Behold, the days are coming,” declares Yahweh, “when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch. He will reign as king and act wisely and do justice and righteousness in the land. In His days Judah will be saved, and Israel will live securely. This is His Name by which He will be called: ‘Yahweh Our Righteousness.’”

Jeremiah 23:5-6

The Correct Pronunciation of Yahweh’s Name

Below is Yahweh’s Name in Hebrew:

יהוה

Hebrew reads right-to-left.  The letter on the right is “yod” followed by “hey” followed by “vav” followed by “hey”.

In ancient times, the letter “vav” was “waw”. The letter “vav” didn’t enter the Hebrew language until somewhere between 600 AD and 1000 AD. To pronounce Yahweh’s Name correctly, you must use a “w” sound, not a “v” sound:

The historic pronunciation of this letter (a voiced bilabial) is /waw/, a pronunciation attested in various Semitic languages (ancient and modern).  Moreover, even the Masoretes (600 C.E.–1000 C.E.) arguably pronounced this letter as /waw/ (not /vav/).  The common pronunciation of this letter today as /vav/ (rather than /waw/) is a reflection of conventions in the modern period, primarily those hailing from Germanic language practices (notice, for example, that the German letter /w/ is pronounced as an English /v/, not as an English /w/; thus, the German word “Wasser” [water] is pronounced /vasser/ in German).  In sum, the tradition of pronouncing this letter as /waw/ is historically more accurate (and so it is found in many grammars of biblical Hebrew, including Thomas Lambdin’s).  The convention of pronouncing it as /vav/ is also acceptable, but this pronunciation does hail from the modern period.

According to linguists, “vav” is acceptable today, but it’s not accurate.

According to Yahweh, if it’s not accurate, it’s not acceptable.

“Therefore behold, I am going to make them know, this time I will make them know My power and My might, and they shall know that My Name is Yahweh.” (Jeremiah 16:21)

His Name is Yahweh. It’s not Yahveh or Yehovah. Linguistically, it is impossible for any name with the “v” sound in it to be Yahweh’s name. The evidence supporting that fact is overwhelming.

Cuneiform tablets from the time of Hammurabi (1750 BC) were discovered. Unlike the Hebrew language, Cuneiform includes vowels. Hebrew uses only consonants. On the Cuneiform tablets, the Name of the “Hebrew Elohim” was mentioned several times, and it is pronounced “Yahweh”. Greek scholars from the 1st century AD confirm that “Yahweh” is the correct pronunciation of His Name.

The current confusion about the pronunciation of Yahweh’s Name proves that bad decisions have serious consequences. In the mid-2nd century BC when rabbis forbade Jewish people from saying “Yahweh”, they probably never imagined that they would make it very difficult for anyone to obey Yahweh’s command to tell the world about Him by Name. That was arguably the worst decision ever made. Satan is the only person who benefitted from it. Regrettably, people who attend churches and synagogues are not hearing Yahweh’s Name at all. The consequences are far-reaching.

Knowing the correct pronunciation of “Yahweh” is important for 3 reasons:

  1. We need to know the Name of our Elohim.
  2. We need to tell people about Yahweh by Name.
  3. We have salvation in the Name Yahweh.

The Facts Shown in a Timeline

In about 165 BC following the reign of Antiochus Epiphanes, leading rabbis forbade the use of Yahweh’s Name.  Their prohibition was codified in the Oral Law, a.k.a., the traditions of the Jews and Halacha.  The rabbis declared that saying Yahweh’s Name was blasphemy, and the penalty for violating their edict was death.  See Sanhedrin 7: 5.

Somewhere between 500 AD and 1000 AD while the vowel marking process in Hebrew was being created, rabbis made up the name Yehovah and taught people that it was the correct pronunciation.  They did it so that if people did say the name, they would be using an incorrect name and would not be committing blasphemy according to Halacha. To get the pronunciation “Yehovah”, they placed the vowel markings for Adonai on the Name Yahweh. It was linguistic sleight of hand.

  • In about 165 BC, Yahweh’s Name was taken out of circulation by rabbis.
  • In about 500 AD, the process of creating vowel markings began.
  • In about 1000 AD, the vowel marking creation process ended.
  • Somewhere between 500 AD and 1000 AD, the letter “vav” was introduced in the Hebrew language. It took the place of the letter “waw” in ancient Hebrew.

About 665 years passed between the time rabbis forbade the use of Yahweh’s Name and the time the vowel marking creation process in Hebrew began.  About 500 years later, the vowel marking creation process ended. The Hebrew letter “vav” replaced the Hebrew letter “waw” during the time the vowel marking process was underway.

It should come as no surprise that the correct pronunciation of Yahweh’s Name is the source of much confusion, but it was never lost. Rabbis have known the correct pronunciation of Yahweh’s Name all along.  They reserved to themselves the “right” to say it, so they needed to know how to pronounce it.  That means the correct pronunciation was never lost. Yahweh is the Creator

“Elohim highly exalted Him [the Messiah], and bestowed on Him [the Messiah] the Name which is above every name [Yahweh], so that at the name of Yeshua [Yahweh] every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess that Yeshua the Messiah is Yahweh, to the glory of Elohim the Father.” (Philippians 2: 9-11)

Every created being in heaven and hell and every person on Earth will bow down and confess that the Messiah is Yahweh to the glory of Elohim the Father. Regrettably, most believers have been taught in churches mostly that those verses refer to the name “Jesus”. That’s not correct. Paul is elevating the Messiah and His real Name to their proper place.

The Messiah’s Name is not a matter of opinion. It’s a matter of fact. It’s either right or wrong. The Name “Yahweh” is right. The name “Jesus” is wrong. That’s not my opinion. It’s a fact.

Yahweh is the Name that’s above every name. Before creation, Elohim the Father “bestowed” the Name Yahweh on the Son. Both of them are called “Yahweh”. The Spirit of Yahweh is called “Yahweh”, too. The Son is the human manifestation of Yahweh. He is the Creator.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with Elohim, and the Word was Elohim. He was in the beginning with Elohim. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. (John 1: 1-5)

Yahweh is the Savior

  • “I, even I, am Yahweh. There is no savior besides Me!” (Isaiah 43: 11)
  • “And it will come about that whoever calls on the Name of Yahweh will be delivered/saved.” (Joel 2: 32)
  • “For these men are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only the third hour of the day; but this is what was spoken of through the prophet Joel:….‘And it shall be that everyone who calls on the Name of Yahweh will be saved.’” (Acts 2: 15 and 21)
  • “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4: 12)
  • “As Scripture says, ‘Anyone who believes in Him will never be put to shame.’ For there is no distinction between Jew and Gentile; for there is one Yahweh over all who is abundantly generous toward everyone who calls on Him; for ‘whoever calls on the Name of Yahweh will be saved.’” (Romans 10: 11-13)

The Messiah is Yahweh

There is a great deal of confusion about who the Messiah is.  For a complete explanation, you need to read the book His Name is Yahweh: Revised Edition, but these three verses provide the truth in a nutshell:

  1. “I, even I, am Yahweh. There is no savior besides Me!” (Isaiah 43: 11)
  2. “Behold, the days are coming,” declares Yahweh, “when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch. He will reign as king and act wisely and do justice and righteousness in the land. In His days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. This is His Name by which He will be called, ‘Yahweh our righteousness.’” (Jeremiah 23: 5-6)
  3. “I have come in my Father’s Name.” (John 5:43)
  4. “Before Abraham existed, I AM.” (John 8: 58)
  5. “Therefore, My people will know My Name. Therefore, they will know on that day that I am He who speaks. Here I AM!” (Isaiah 52: 6)
  6. “You will not see Me again until you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the Name of Yahweh.'” (Matthew 23:39)

See “Preachers, Seminary Professors, and Bible Publishers, WAKE UP!“.

The Messiah is the physical manifestation of Yahweh.  He has appeared many times in Person to accomplish His will.

The book His Name is Yahweh: Revised Edition includes a chapter titled “Yahweh Has a Human Form”.  You will find it very helpful if you have any doubts about who the Messiah is.  Of course, you should read the rest of the book, as well.

Read His Name is Yahweh: Revised Edition

His Name is Yahweh: Revised Edition presents biblical proof that the Messiah discussed in the Old Testament is Yahweh, that the Person most Christians call “Jesus” is Yahweh, that Yahweh is the Name in which we have salvation, and that Yahweh is the only Name we are to declare to the world.

Yahweh is Elohim.  We need to declare His Name so that people will know who we represent.

The information in His Name is Yahweh: Revised Edition is not new information. It’s older than the Bible itself.  Thanks to serious translation errors, Yahweh’s Name is hidden in plain sight in most Bibles.  Once you see it, you will ask yourself 2 questions:

  • I have read the Bible, but I never saw this before.  Why?
  • I have attended church most of my life, but I have never heard a preacher say this from the pulpit.  Why?

After you read His Name is Yahweh: Revised Edition, you will know the answers to those questions. Please tell others about it.
